How to Succeed

To learn to float and swim on your own the Miracle Swimming way,* you need at least the book and tether. The book gives you every single step of overcoming fear and learning to swim. It explains why you may not blame yourself for not learning to swim in the past. Floating is a basic skill to learn how the water works. There’s a lot of learning that comes before floating! Skip no steps!

Tether: Knowing you can always reach safety and stop when you want, you have time to learn. Learn that water holds you up; that you can be comfortable; how to stand up from a float.

If you’re one of the few who are not held up by the water, you’ll learn how to remain 100% present and calm, sinking! It’s not an emergency! The book explains how..

One strap goes around your waist. Another connects to the Float Bar, ladder or rail.  A third strap extends or shortens your distance from the Float Bar. As you become confident, expand the tether to float further away. Color coded connectors make connections simple. Pipes fill with water, keeping Float Bar on the floor. Float Bar quickly drains during removal from pool.

Good floats can be horizontal, diagonal, or vertical. The latter two are normal for someone with lean legs.

Use a Float Bar at left if you have no rail, ladder, or hook in your pool to connect to the tether.

FAQ

1. Why do I need the book, video, and podcast?
You need the book and tether. You don’t need the video and podcast, though they add to your understanding and comfort. Much common knowledge is incorrect. If you use common knowledge to teach yourself to float, it’s likely that you’ll follow traditional thinking, skip steps, and become discouraged.

The video and podcast flesh out your understanding of how the water—and healing fear—work. This information is not to be found elsewhere. At Miracle Swimming, no step is skipped; success is inevitable. Our book, video, and podcast teach you how to learn, feeling safe all the time.

The urgency to learn is understandable. However, you can only guarantee learning if you start at the beginning and skip no steps. The book provides every single step an adult needs to learn to swim, from fear in shallow water to freedom in deep water. It doesn’t include strokes because strokes are not relevant to overcoming fear or learning to swim. Strokes are for swimming efficiently.

The video, 47 minutes, is an introduction to our system, following the story of an Essentials 1 course with actual students learning for the first time. It includes the infallible 5 Circles system which leads students out of fear; lessons of learning to put your face in; and front and back floats. Excerpts of the course follow students’ progress over an 8-week / 24 hour course including their first lessons in the deep end. It’s our starting course in action.

The photo, above left, shows our wallbar, used in our classes and custom-fit to the lip of the pool. You would use a railing, ladder or our Float Bar

2. How high should the Float Bar be?
Your belly should not touch the Float Bar when you float on your back. If it does, put it in shallower water. Or, make your Float Bar taller.

How can you know in advance if your belly will touch it?
If you’re fairly lean, you will most likely float at a diagonal and your feet will be on the floor, belly below the surface and the Bar.
If you’re not as lean, you will most likely float horizontally and your belly will touch the Float Bar.

*3. Does the water hold everyone up? Even me?
Most Olympic swimmers sink. There’s a small percentage of the rest of us who sink. We are dense with muscle and bone. Those who do sink can be perfectly safe when they learn what we teach.

**Specifications of Float Bar: all adjustable
Height: 40 inches to top of cross bar
Length: 67 inches
Width (including side supports): 81 inches
Width of cross bar: 40 inches
End cross bars on the floor aren’t essential

The Float Bar sold here is for back yard and community pools. There’s an image of it in the video above in the section, “How to Succeed.” The wallbar attached to the lip of the pool above is custom-made for our courses. Patent pending.

She floats horizontally, so her bar is 2 inches above the surface.

How to Put It Together

Got the Float Bar? Our founder will show you in a 5-minute video how to assemble the Float Bar and Tether once you own them. Very simple. The video is sent at the time of purchase.

Assemble the Float Bar with or without the end pieces on the floor. Some people prefer the added stability. The Float Bar functions fine without them.
